NASSAU SHOPPING
Visitors will be pleased to discover that shopping in Nassau can include stops by national chains for basics, as well as independent shops and boutiques for more unique purchases. Sometimes malls and shopping centers are the most convenient options, but be sure to check out Nassau's downtown or historic districts to find the most unusual gifts and trinkets, art, antiques, and clothing. Our 10Best guide highlights the best stores and shops in Nassau. Kennedy Gallery In addition to paintings and drawings from established regional artists, the Kennedy Gallery offers a variety of fine crafts, ceramics and sculpture. Emerging artists are often featured as well. Originals and limited edition prints and professional framing are available. Straw Market
After a devastating fire in 2001, Nassau's Straw Market moved up the street to temporary quarters. Whether a new permanent location will ever be built remains to be seen, but in the meantime the bustling market continues to thrive, with dozens of vendors selling handmade wares that range from straw hats and baskets to wood carvings and seashell jewelry. T-shirts are here in abundance, often at bargain basement prices, but be aware that some vendors try to sell cheap imported goods as "authentic Bahamian" crafts - look for tiny stickers that say things like "Made in Taiwan." Bay Street
Nassau's main thoroughfare has all the big names in fashion, plus an assortment of independent shops selling everything from high-end dinnerware to fine jewelry to seashell-encrusted tissue box covers. If you have something in mind, you can probably find it here, but you may prefer to simply browse until the "right thing" finds you. Bay Street is teeming with local color and lined with popular tourist sights such as the Straw Market, Vendue House, and the stately Hilton British Colonial Hotel. A bit of trivia: when pirates (an odoriferous bunch even at the best of times, by all accounts) controlled the street, it was reported that the stench was so bad you could smell it far out at sea. Thankfully, today Bay Street reeks only of history! The Plait Lady Straw Work Take a piece of the Bahamas home with you when you visit this unique shop that specializes in woven Bahamian palm leaf items like trays, mats and baskets. The wares range from the simple to an intricate coiled design. Bahamacraft Centre PARADISE ISLAND. If you want to shop for Bahamian art and crafts but don't have a lot of time to go prowling through the city streets to look for the perfect item, this is the place to go! In one centralized location you'll find dozens of booths where local vendors offer up the very best (and sometimes the very worst) of regional art and crafts. Expertly made fine straw baskets, blown glass, colorful Junkanoo masks, batik clothing and vibrant paintings are just some of the great items here, along with plenty of unique items fashioned from seashells. New Providence Art and Antiques
New Providence offers contemporary and historic Bahamian paintings by artists such as Amos Lee. You'll also find a great selection of island memorabilia, silver, porcelain, furniture and even coins. See their Website for more info....... Nassau Glass Company
Known as the largest on the island, this gallery started out in 1959 as a glass making business. Eventually the focus shifted to fine art, and today the gallery features a huge variety of works from established artists like Eddie Minnis, Ricardo Knowles, Antonius Roberts, Brent Malone, Louis Chuck and Buster Hall. See their Website for more info...... Graycliff Cigar Company
Although Graycliff is well-known for elegant dining, it also boasts the largest selection of hand rolled cigars on the island. Cigar aficionados know the name Avelino Lara, who is famous for his experience with Cuban cigars, and oversees the process here at Graycliff. An expanded factory opened to the public complete with tours and a separate shop in which to purchase the stogies. They have a very successful online cigar store, and will ship anywhere. Festival Place This is the unmissable orange, yellow and white building at the entrance to the cruise ship port. The main tourism office and a post office are conveniently situated here, along with a plethora of colorful local arts, crafts, gifts and edibles. The finest local artists and craftspeople keep booths here, making it a great destination if you're searching for special mementos of your trip. Live music lends an even more festive air on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Doongalik Studios In addition to Bahamian fine art (paintings, sculpture), Doongalik exhibits an array of gifts and fine crafts. Elaborate, colorful Junkanoo masks, handmade furniture, posters and note cards are just some of the exciting finds here. Colombia Emeralds International Bay St. near Rawson Square. Choose from a wide selection of diamond, ruby, sapphire and tanzanite gemstone jewellry, including handmade 18K gold Baraka, the ultimate in Italian craftsmanship.
