EXUMAS BOATING ![]() Located to the southeast of Nassau and New Providence Island are the Exumas. Rated as one of the most beautiful cruising grounds of the Bahamas, the Exumas offer secluded anchorages, spectacular scenery and very friendly people.Soon you will begin to understand why the Exumas is the place to take that special private cruise of a lifetime EXUMA FAMILY ISLAND REGATTA ![]() Regatta Time Merengue (Click to hear) Description What began in 1954 as a call for working fisherman to spruce up their sailing vessels at the end of the sponging and crawfishing season and to race one another for cash prizes has evolved more than 50 years later into one of the Bahamas' most respected regattas and a gorgeous venue for the traditional island craft of wooden boat building. Held this year from April 25-29 in George Town, Exuma, the National Family Island Regatta is open only to sailboats that are "designed, built, owned, skippered and crewed by Bahamians." Although the first competition—known as the Out Islands Regatta but today referred to simply as Regatta—was just a gathering of about 70 old fishing boats, today's Regatta is a much more complex event, whose entries in its five racing categories must all comply with a strict set of guidelines. For example, all competing boats must be constructed only of wood, crafted by traditional methods and utilize only cotton sails. No spreaders or winches are allowed, nor is any type of logo or advertising permitted on the huge sails. (By Donald Rodrigue) Each year during the third week of April, the Bahamas hold the National Family Island Regatta. The boats that they sail are traditional Bahamian racing sloops and they come from islands all over the Bahamas. Some are sailed in and many are brought in on the weekly mail boat or by a freight boat. The boats are beautiful with a huge sail area and hiking boards for the crew to scramble on to balance the boat against the force of the wind in her sail. On shore, there are parades, food and drink vendors and camaraderie beyond belief Where: Georgetown, Exuma When: third week in April ROLLE'S SEA KAYAKING ![]() We’ve been married and kayaking together since 2001.
