ELEUTHERA DIVING
Diving is good in Eleuthera because of a few reasons; the clear water, and the proximity of the many reefs to the shoreline, especially on the Atlantic side. For snorkelling, you can do this from almost anywhere in the island. DIVE SHOPS ![]() The dive shops are concentrated in Harbour Island, where there is a concentration of good deep-sea diving sites. Because of the dangerous reefs in North Eleuthera, there were many wrecks, which are great for exploring. Go HERE to see the few dive shops in Eleuthera DIVE CHARTERS ![]() Things are very laid back on the island, and you can hook up with almost anyone with a boat, who will take you both diving or fishing. The formal charters are listed on this link in Harbour Island and the mainland of Eleuthera. Go HERE to see available dive eharters in Eleuthera..... DIVE SPOTS ![]()
As previously stated, you can dive from the shore, or beach. There
is a concentration of excellent dive sites near Harbor Island, if
you are interested in exploring wrecks. Near the small island of
Spanish Wells is the 'Devil's Backbone', an area which has many
wrecks, old and modern. Also nearby is the 'Eleuthera Train Wreck',
where the wreckage of railroad cars lays, from the era of the Civil
War. There is a 1919 freighter, 200 feet long nearby, in about 35
feet of water. Finally, there is a 265 foot freighter, that sank in
1971 to explore in the same general area. Also, note the famous
"Current Cut Dive", which allows you to drift
at high speeds at the change of the tide. BAHAMAS REEF FISH There is a great variety of sealife on the reefs; parrot fish, grouper that grunt, tobacco fish, spadefish, trumpetfish, angelfish, chub, puffers, barracuda, morays, snappers and others; go HERE to see photos of the aforementioned, as well as other bahamas reef fish |
