BAHAMAS GOLF

(see website of Bahamas Golf Federation HERE)

Freeport Golf

Consistent sunshine makes Golf in the Bahamas the ideal choice for a golf vacation or group outing. The islands regularly host world-class tournaments. There is no winter season to limit play, just year-round blue skies and warm weather. Nassau averages seven hours of completely sunny skies per day, and rain seldom lasts for longer than it takes to get under cover, even during the rainy season. An average winter temperature of 70? means the grass is always green and you can Play Golf in the Bahamas 365 days a year.

GRAND BAHAMA

Lucaya Golf Course

Bahamas Airlines

Built in 1962, the Lucayan Course is a Dick Wilson creation well known for its tight fairways and sharply angled doglegs, all of which places a real emphasis on the player?s shot-making abilities. The course features heavy foliage, lush fairways, and fast greens guarded by cavernous bunkers. Dick Wilson is well known for his work at Bay Hill, in Orlando, Florida and, of course, his signature creation, the Blue Monster at Doral in Miami. It?s no surprise, then, that the Lucayan Course doesn?t disappoint. For more info, go to their website

The Reef at Our Lucaya

Our Lucaya

The Reef, at Our Lucaya, is a Robert Trent Jones-designed links-style course. Opened only recently in 2000, it requires a solid short game if one is to score low. The wide, close-cropped fairways are forgiving but the daunting array of bunkers that protect the greens will punish any wayward shots.

Jones, while staying within the bounds of design excellence, has given his players a wide range of choices in their approach to the greens. The bump-and-run, ever the popular route to the pin on the links courses of Scotland and coastal England, is probably the best way in for those who might be intimidated by the army of bunkers stationed around the course. Opt for the wedge and go for the pin, and you?d better be on your game. If not, you?ll be doomed to visit the sandy wastes.

The greens are large and, for the most-part, fairly flat, but the speed of those greens can often be deceptive: a score of five or even six on a par 3 is not out of the ordinary. Then there?s the wind that blows unpredictably in from the ocean and, as if all that is not enough, there's water present on 13 of the 18 holes. For more info, go to their website

Fortune Hills Country Club

Bahamas Golf

Originally intended to be an 18-hole course, Fortune Hills is a nine-hole course that plays to championship levels when played twice from the diverse tee settings. Overall the nine holes play to a solid 3,458 yards with a 125 slope rating. Designed by Joe Lee and Dick Wilson, Fortune Hills not only gives golfers welcoming greens and brilliant scenery, but also some stern challenges, especially on the No. 3 hole where water will be a golfer's nemesis. Always striving to keep the course in top condition, the management is constantly working to keep the greens and fairways perfectly manicured. Near great fishing options, Fortune Hills has become a must play for those looking to experience all the golf Freeport has to offer.

NASSAU

Blue Shark Golf Club

Greg Norman

Designed by Greg Norman, pictured above, Blue Shark Golf Club offers not only beautiful ocean views but also a challenging links-style layout with many natural challenges. The golf course dates back to the 1780's, but it was originally a plantation. The lush landscape features a rolling, hilly terrain with wetlands and freshwater lakes. The fairways are wide and there are strategically placed bunkers throughout. The notorious 10th, 11th, and 12th holes, known as the "Shark's Teeth," feature several formidable challenges including bunkers and water hazards. Despite the daunting elements of the course, it is quite player-friendly. Blue Shark Golf Club also features an extensive championship-sized practice facility with individual teeing, putting, and chipping greens. For more info, see the website......

Cable Beach & Golf Club boasts a links-style golf course that offers some of the most affordable prices on golf in the Bahamas. The course is popular among both tourists and locals not only for its value but also for its unpretentious and vibrant atmosphere. With water hazards coming into play on sixteen of the eighteen holes, this course requires precision. Tropical trees accent rolling fairways for added challenge. Although Cable Beach & Golf Club is not a long course, it is consistently in good condition and the club provides excellent service. This player-friendly golf course is perfect for visitors looking for a more authentic Bahamian experience. For more info, go to their website.......

ABACOS

Treasure Cay Golf Course

Bahamas Golfing

Located in Treasure Cay, north of Marshfield Harbour, this course is carved out of the woods on a generous tract of land so there is no interference from adjacent fairways. Measuring 6985 yards from the blue tees and with 60 strategically placed sand bunkers, it challenges even the best players. Natural terrain and undulations along with imaginative contouring provide subtleties which will make you want to play it more than once.

The Treasure Cay Golf Course was designed by Dick Wilson, one of America's most renowned golf course architects, with several classic courses consistently ranked in "Golf Digest's Top 100". The best known might be the Doral "Blue Monster" in Miami. Treasure Cay was among the last courses that Wilson designed but unfortunately he died before the course was finished in 1968. His assistant, Joe Lee, completed the work and went on himself to become a famous golf course architect.

The Abaco Club at Winding Bay

Bahamas Golfing

This is a private Ritz Carleton Resort.

The architects claim that the layout at The Abaco Club is the ?first Scottish links-style course in a tropical location.? If that means it?s flat a featureless, then so be it. Scottish links courses, however, are anything but featureless. True, the great courses at the ?Home of Golf? are wind-swept and often boast of only a single, lonely tree, but the dunes, deep grasslands, heather and gorse impart a certain austere, even mystical atmosphere found nowhere else in the world.

Does that mean the golf course at The Abaco Club is a sham? Far from it. Golf course architects Donald Steel and Tom McKenzie have created a very beautiful platform for this our favorite sport. Narrow fairways, spectacular greens, and stunning oceanscapes are the just a few of the attributes of this little-known venue. The course plays a long 7,183 yards off the back tees for a tough par of 72. And, very much in the style of its Scottish peers, it is, at times, a remote and wind-swept corner of the Bahamas.

The Abaco Club, and its golf course, is a private facility, but that doesn?t mean you can stay and play. There are a number of private units available for rent and, as a guest, you?ll be able to enjoy all the amenities of the Abaco Club, including the golf course, Beach Club, tennis facilities, scuba diving, swimming, hiking and, of course, soaking up the sun as only the Bahamas can provide it ? beautiful snow-white beaches, emerald waters, and seven hours of sunshine more than 280 days of the year.

BERRY ISLANDS

Great Harbour Cay Club

There is a great nine hole golf course in Great Harbour Cay. Back in the 50's, Great Harbour Cay was a hot spot with the Hollywood set (see this page). Not much information is available about the golf course, so it would be best to check beforehand, if you are serious about golfing in Great Harbour Cay.

ELEUTHERA

Cotton Bay Club

Bahamas Golfing

A Robert Trent Jones seaside golf course, Cotton Bay is still open, but has seen better days, back in the 50's, where people like Juan Tripp, head of PanAm, used to fly his buddies into Eleuthera for a quick round of golf. Frayed around the edges, the course is still playable.

Secluded 450-acre resort; 18-holes, 72-par, 7,000 yards Only Robert Trent Jones-designed course in The Bahamas; OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!!!

129 bunkers, 13 water hazards This course was voted, in 1989, as one of the 31 best golf courses in the world!! It is slightly frayed at the edges, but still maintains it top flight quality, as well as an oceanfront hole.

Royal lsland Club

Bahamas Golfing

This development, on Royal Island in North Eleuthera, near Harbour Island, is being currently built now, but looks like this resort, which will include an 18 hole course, will happen, and, unlike many other resorts in the Bahamas, progress is being made. There will be 14 oceanside holes! It is backed by former Dallas Cowboy and currrent developer, Roger Stauback. See website for further info.........
